when it sank in 1912, there were actually more lifeboats than the law required, but since the ship was marketed as "unsinkable," nobody took the matter seriously. in practice the number of lifeboats ended up being reduced. also, its fourth funnel was fake. the ship ran just fine on three funnels anyway; the fourth was added purely for show and had no functional purpose. a nearby ship called the californian sent an iceberg warning, but since the titanic's wireless operator was busy with his own traffic, he wasn't really listening. and that later sparked the whole "why didn't the closest ship come to help" debate.
