foreign direct investment is when a company or person puts money into a business in another country and actually owns or controls part of it.
like toyota building a factory in the u.s. or an american company buying a major stake in a company overseas.
for countries, it can mean jobs, factories, technology, and new money coming in.
the catch is that too much dependence on foreign investors can also mean profits, influence, and important decisions leave the country just as easily as the money came in.

persian lessons
persian lessons is next on my watchlist.
the premise already got me: a jewish prisoner survives by pretending to be persian, then has to invent an entire fake language to keep the lie alive.
going in knowing almost nothing else, which honestly feels like the best way to watch something like this. persion lesson - imdb 7.4/10 -
albert einstein
einstein’s biggest idea was basically this:
time and space are not fixed. they can stretch and bend.
really heavy things, like stars and planets, bend space around them. that bending is what we feel as gravity.
and if you move really, really fast, time can actually pass differently for you than for someone standing still.
he also showed that mass and energy are basically two forms of the same thing:

oldboy (2003 film)
oldboy might be the best revenge movie ever made. not because the revenge feels satisfying, but because by the end you're questioning who actually won, who deserved what, and whether revenge can destroy the person carrying it just as much as the target.

bretton woods system
the bretton woods system was basically the post war attempt to make the global economy less chaotic.
in 1944, countries agreed to tie their currencies to the us dollar, while the dollar itself was tied to gold. it also helped create the imf and world bank.
the system fell apart after the us stopped converting dollars into gold in 1971, but its biggest legacy is still everywhere: the dollar became the center of the global financial system.
