    people do not necessarily believe what is true. they believe what feels true, what fits their identity, what confirms what they already think, or what gets repeated often enough to become familiar.

    that is what makes post truth so dangerous.

    the lie does not have to defeat the truth.

    it just has to make the truth feel optional.

  • a good example is the 2016 brexit campaign bus that said the uk sent the eu £350 million a week and suggested that money could instead fund the nhs. the figure ignored the uk rebate and eu spending that came back to the uk, and the uk statistics authority later called it a clear misuse of official statistics. yet the slogan had already done its job because it was simple, emotional, visual, and easy to remember.

    that is what makes post truth interesting to me. the strongest claim is not always the most accurate one. sometimes it is simply the one that gives people the clearest story to believe.
