the last ten minutes completely changed the way i saw this film.

for most of the runtime, i thought i was watching a fairly straightforward revenge story told through metaphor. then the ending clicked, everything fell into place, and what had been a 7/10 instantly became a 9/10 for me.

the only reason it isn't higher is the opening sequence. i still have no meaningful explanation for it, and honestly, i wish i could unsee it.

the pain of feeling the distance between yourself and the world.

the cinematography, performances, and overall production are solid, though not particularly groundbreaking. what really makes the film stand out is its central idea and the moral dilemma it leaves you with.

imagine being deeply in love with someone. would you actually want that person to love you back with absolute, all-consuming devotion? the film suggests that our desire to be loved has a terrifying side. many of the moments presented as horror aren't supernatural at all—they already exist in countless real-life relationships: jealous rages that end in murder, obsessive stalking disguised as love, and complete self-destruction in the name of devotion.

in that sense, the movie argues that love itself can be a horror story.

i couldn't help but think that, in the hands of a director like kubrick or spielberg, this premise could have become one of those unforgettable films that stays with people for decades. even so, i still enjoyed it and appreciated what it was trying to say.

but breaking bad has some very special technical details that exist in it and in no other show. just as the godfather's first film is considered the peak of cinema and seen as the work closest to perfection, breaking bad is the exact equivalent of that in the world of television.

there's a principle i've always stood by when it comes to shows and films: angle is everything, meaning the framing. that whole, unified image the camera takes in... because in a production, what conveys the main idea and feeling to the viewer best is the angles. acting, screenplay, editing, or other details aren't as decisive as the power of the angles. wherever you plant the camera, or the entire space the camera takes in while it's moving, is the peak of the art of cinema. what makes paintings or snapshots beautiful, too, is mostly the originality of the angle. what makes a picture special is looking at it from an angle only a handful of people in the world could ever look from, and painting it just like that.

wanting to look through their phone out of the blue for no reason would be foolish, in my opinion, but if a moment comes where they start trying to hide their phone, keep it on silent all the time, or get overly tense or panicky when you ask about it, then there's a problem there.
